Understanding Diesel Particulate Filters

Modern Diesels have come a long way since the tractor days of gone by. They are now efficient, Quiet and perform very well. There are a few things that need to be aware of when owning a diesel BMW or MINI. 

 

Diesels have a big filter on the exhaust to catch all the black soot that we used to see come out of the exhaust. This had to be done for them to meet Emission standards in Europe. Great idea but what they don't tell you is that the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) has to be regenerated during driving. This means the car has to burn off the black soot particles from the filter as you drive. This only occurs when driving above 80Km/h for over 30 minutes. 

 

Failure to do this will block the filter up chocking the car up. This then leads to expensive repairs and many hours with the car off road. 

 

Again there are also a few other factors that the car need to see before it will do this 'burn off'. If one of these factors are not met the car will not burn off the soot that has built up in the filter. This is when the warning light for your DPF comes on the dash.
